Best Summer Destinations in Europe: My Top Travel Picks

Girls trip

When to 'Summer' in Europe

Planning a summer vacation in Europe is one of the most exciting ways to experience the continent’s beaches, historic cities, and scenic landscapes.

While summer is a magical time to travel Europe, it also comes with its challenges. Crowds. Big crowds. If you’re like me, nothing ruins a perfect European summer holiday faster than elbowing your way through packed streets. Here’s what you should know:

Busiest Months: June, July, and August are peak travel months for Europe. Many families from the US visit during these months due to summer break.

Best Months for Fewer Crowds: May, late August, and September. I know September technically isn’t summer, but trust me—visiting in early September is worth it. I’ve spent three summers in Europe, and Mediterranean waters FINALLY feel warm by September after soaking in that summer sun. If you’re from a warmer area like me (hello, my fellow Floridians and sunshine lovers), this is key! You’ll also find lower flight options and more accessibility for luxury travel.

Summers in Europe offer endless possibilities, but if you’re new to exploring the continent, it’s worth starting with some of the essential highlights that most travelers aim to experience before venturing off the beaten path. Once you’ve checked those iconic destinations off your list, I highly recommend exploring Europe’s lesser-known corners. This list is a bit of a mix of the two.

When deciding where to go for summer in Europe, I find that the perfect trip often includes a balance of city escapes and a bit of nature. Whether it’s relaxing on a beach or exploring picturesque mountain trails. To help inspire your next getaway, I’ve organized this list into beach escapes, city adventures, scenic hikes, and destinations that offer a blend of both. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you prefer the energy of the city, the serenity of nature, or a mix of the two? Share your favorites in the comments!

Readers note *

As you read through, you’ll find some spots marked with  “Where We Stayed” for certain locations. This indicates an accommodation I personally used and can recommend. You’ll only see this noted for hotels or stays I genuinely loved.

CORFU, GREECE

Beach in Corfu Greece

Corfu, Greece

Skip the busy streets of Santorini and Athens for the serene beauty of Corfu before everyone else discovers it! With its breathtaking coastlines, charming old town, and fewer crowds, Corfu offers a more relaxed and authentic Greek experience. While the island does attract its fair share of tourists during the summer, it’s far less crowded compared to hotspots like Santorini or Athens. Most visitors here are Europeans enjoying their holidays. For an even better experience, consider avoiding travel during major European public holidays. Corfu is the perfect destination for those seeking postcard perfect beaches combined with rich Greek culture, and tranquility.

During our time here, we enjoyed a perfectly balanced routine of exploration and relaxation. We spent our days discovering hidden cove beaches around the island and our evenings unfolding in Corfu’s charming old town, where we enjoyed candlelit dinners in narrow alleyway cafes, followed by late nights filled with live music and fine wine.
